Steam Frame is Valve’s next-generation standalone virtual reality headset, designed to bring together high-quality PC VR and native standalone gaming in a single device.
Steam Frame joins Valve’s expanding family of hardware products alongside Steam Deck and Steam Machine. It’s a direct successor of the Valve Index VR headset.
Like Steam Deck, Steam Frame runs SteamOS but is built around an ARM based architecture. Steam Frame’s killer feature is the ability to support Standalone play alongside PC VR streaming, using the included dongle to wirelessly stream from your gaming PC. This makes it possible to play supported titles anywhere while benefiting from the efficiency of SteamOS and native ARM software.
One of Steam Frame’s biggest advantages is its operating system. Valve have spent several years bringing new life to the linux community and in its current iteration, gaming on linux has never been more accessible.
SteamOS powers the entire experience, providing access to a KDE desktop mode alongside the gaming focused Game Mode. Information is still incoming on how complete the SteamOS experience will be on Steam Frame, but if valve support the hardware in the same way as the Steam Deck, you can expect frequent updates and continued support in future.
